£1.6bn birthday gift

Brits spend an amazing £1.6 billion on birthday gifts each year.
On average people spend a week preparing for a birthday and spend £30.69 on gifts for a close family member or friend, according to Mint research.

A further £47.77 is spent on peoples own birthdays.

Mint managing director Jerry Toher said: "In our survey, close to a third of people said they used their birthday as an excuse to celebrate and its clear theyre looking for something more than a cake and a few candles these days.

"But far from being extravagant in their spending, people are planning months rather than days in advance.

"In doing so, they are carefully managing short term expenditure over a period of time using clever means, such as credit cards, to do this."

However, peoples normal spending is way off those of the stars.

John Travoltas wife held a surprise birthday party for him in Mexico, as you do, with 280 guests invited to mark the special day, while Kate Moss decided to jet her friends off to a luxury Jamaican hotel to celebrate her 30th.

However, Paris Hiltons 21st birthday celebrations blow both these out of the water.

The hotel heiress had parties, each costing $75,000, in Las Vegas, Tokyo, London, LA, and New York.
