BBQ damage sparks home insurance warning

Homeowners in Briton are being advised to ensure their home insurance is up to date during the forthcoming summer months as a new report has warned of the staggering cost of damage caused by barbeques.

According to Halifax Home Insurance, accidents related to barbeques have led to a total of £296 million worth of damage to homes and gardens, with the average cost of each accident totalling £148.

However, almost a quarter of a million Britons have caused between £500 to £2,500 worth of damage to their property, proving costly for those without home insurance.

Literally fuelling some of these fires is a high level of ignorance as to what can be safely used to help light the barbeque.

Worryingly, petrol, spirits and perfume have all been used, adding not just a risk to the surrounding garden and property but also to the health of those near the barbeque.

"With the MET office forecasting a wet summer it is vital that people who wish to press ahead with hosting BBQs do not resort to lighting them with combustible or explosive materials," warned Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance.

She added that acting irresponsibly could also invalidate the home insurance policy.
