American Express Travel Insurance is predicting that A level results due this week will precipitate a mini-travel boom.
The travel insurance provider has said that many of the 100,000 teenagers who are not accepted to university each year will choose to spend their gap year travelling.
The company points out that travel research should be done before firming up any insurance plans; particularly where extreme sports are concerned, for which many standard policies do not provide cover.
"Like any other element of gap travel, insurance should be researched and planned as terms and conditions can very widely," said Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services.
"Parents want the peace of mind that a global insurer such as American Express can offer," she added.
According to UCAS, 31,059 students have chosen a deferred entry place this year.
