AA Travel Insurance has released figures showing up to 400,000 people undertake winter sports without adequate policies.

AA Travel Insurance has released figures showing up to 400,000 people undertake winter sports without adequate policies.

Its own research has revealed 60 per cent of holidaymakers take travel insurance as part of their package, meaning it is not regulated and cannot be mediated by the Financial Ombudsman.

Clare Emsley, head of AA Travel Insurance, said: "Customers often simply tick a box without properly understanding what they are paying for, because important terms and conditions are not drawn to their attention."

"For example, many travel agents neglect to tell customers that pre-existing medical conditions need to be declared," she added.

AA Travel Insurance encourages those hitting the slopes to read the small print to ensure their policy includes such activities and to consider standalone cover to take advantage of the added protection it affords in case of complaints.

The AA is currently offering a ten per cent discount on its travel insurance for new customers, with a further five per cent discount for existing AA personal members.
