American Express has noted the importance of built-in purchase protection in credit card comparison.
The credit provider noted that it offers purchase protection and online fraud protection as standard on all its credit and charge cards.
And it added that such features place it ahead of the 43 per cent of credit cards which were found to have no purchase protection in a recent study.
American Express said: "When Christmas gifts, outfits or festive foods are purchased on an American Express card they are covered against loss, theft and accidental damage."
Single items with a value of up to £2,500 are covered, with total annual protection provided of £20,000.
Payments are protected for up to 90 days after the date of purchase, according to the terms of the card.
Meanwhile, consumers are also protected against unauthorised purchases made fraudulently online.
According to UK payments association Apacs, card-not-present fraud accounted for £95.3 million in the first half of 2006, with a surge in transactions expected ahead of Christmas.
