Shop assistants should check that credit card numbers match those on receipts, as well as checking the customers name, according to Barclaycard.

The advice follows research from the credit providers business banking arm which found that 39 per cent of retailers were victims of crime in the past year.

Bill Thomson, commercial director of acquiring for Barclaycard Business, said: "Retailers have a particular fear of being burgled with concerns of credit and debit card fraud following closely behind."

"To try to allay these fears retailers should work with their local police forces, crime prevention groups and their card acquirer," he added, noting that in this way businesses can fully protect themselves against fraud.

Some 17 per cent of respondents claimed they had been targeted by fraud in the past 12 months, while 27 per cent listed the problem as one of their biggest worries.

Barclaycard stresses that its customers are not held liable for fraud committed against their account unless they have displayed negligence, such as by revealing their pin.
