American Express has warned its customers that they should be aware of the limitations which are imposed on its travel insurance policies.
According to the insurer, travel insurance policies frequently include ceiling amounts on the value of goods which can be claimed back.
Travellers are told to calculate the total value of their luggage and possessions as American Express annual classic travel insurance has limits of £250 for single items and £300 overall.
Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Insurance Services, said: "Many travellers do not read their policy terms and conditions before travelling and are unaware that insurers impose a single item limit."
"We would encourage everyone to be sure they know what they are purchasing when choosing travel insurance," she added.
In a recent survey, American Express found that 43 per cent of travellers had packed goods worth more than £250, putting them at risk of not being covered for loss or damage.
American Express offers the Travellers Cheque Card, which is prepaid and may be topped up, as well as being accepted in shops and at cash machines.
