Backpacking not about saving money

Travel guide publisher Lonely Planet asserts that backpackers are not necessarily undertaking such a holiday to save money.

Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall explains that individuals are typically unwilling to miss out on the experiences available to them while backpacking.

"People are much more interested in the actual experiences while theyre away and are prepared to pay for them," he contends.

"If you go all the way to New Zealand you are going to want to do that bungee jump or skydive."

He adds that many people are reluctant to arrive home to friends and family and admit that they did not undertake such an activity.

Mr Hall continues that many Britons may be working harder before setting off on a journey to ensure they do not miss out once there.

He concludes that figures which indicate greater expenditure by backpackers may mean they are saving up a greater level of funds before leaving home.
