    Air Miles

Air miles cards are similar to frequent flyer programmes, however, instead of earning miles for purchasing flights, you earn points that can be used towards flights whenever you use your credit card to buy anything.

Miles earned through spending can also be combined with points you earn from frequent flying schemes or other credit card reward programs that you use. When added together, multiple rewards solutions can mean that you earn free flights more quickly. However, it's worth keeping in mind that you must still pay charges and taxes on flights purchased with air miles. What's more, the availability of flights bought with air miles is often quite limited, which means you need to be flexible when booking.

Can I Earn More with a Companion?

Many air miles cards include the option for "companion tickets" when you spend a certain amount. These benefits enable you to take someone with you on your flight. For instance, if you're taking a long-haul business class flight and you're offered companion tickets, your guest will also be taking a long-haul business class flight. While air miles credit cards are held and paid by one person, adding a supplementary cardholder to the plan can also allow you to earn air miles faster.

When Is the Best Time to Get an Air Miles Card?

Because multiple searches into your credit history can have a negative effect on your chances to succeed with future applications, if you believe that you'll need to apply for other important credit soon, such as a mortgage, you may need to hold off on getting an air miles card so as to spread out your applications.

Will I Need to Pay Additional Fees?

Some air miles cards require you to pay annual fees for your rewards. Sometimes these fees can be as high as £150 a year. Because of the costs associated with air miles cards, if you don't make purchases on your card often enough to earn plenty of flights, you might find that the card's benefits fall short of the price of keeping it. It's worth noting that the cards that do come without an annual fee generally offer a lower expenditure to point ratio.

Are Air Miles Cards Good for Borrowing Purposes?

Air miles cards are intended to be a tool to help consumers earn rewards miles. If you need to borrow cash frequently as well, then you'd be better served looking for cards that offer the lowest interest rates. For an air miles card to be effective, it's crucial to ensure that you can pay off your balance in full at the end of each month, otherwise, the interest payments will outweigh the advantages of earning future flight points.

How Much do I Have to Spend for a Free Flight?

The amount that you need to spend to earn a free flight will vary according to the card that you choose. However, certain air miles credit card providers will allow you to pay to top up your points if you haven't yet accrued enough rewards to get the flight you want. Similarly, you will also be able to combine your points with other credit card rewards, which means that these cards are best suited to people who spend, and travel, frequently.

Do I Need to Have a Good Credit Score?

While air miles cards shouldn't be used to borrow money, they are still classed as credit cards, which means that you will still need to pass a credit check in order for your application to be successful. Most air miles cards require you to have a decent income and reasonable credit history.

How does our comparison table work?

Our credit card comparison tool can help you identify the right credit card for you. How you choose a credit card will be driven by what you want from it, and we have broken down those key features for easier comparisons. To help you, we have initially ranked our credit cards by 'Our Most Popular', i.e. the cards that our users felt most suited their needs. You can reorder the comparison according to other criteria via the drop-down box directly above the table.
