Rewards credit cards

Banks offer a whole range of different reward schemes for customers that use their cards.

Often, the credit card provider will have a tie-in with a commercial partner like a supermarket, high street shop or leisure chain. Every time you spend money on your credit card you'll get reward points or discounts which you can spend with the associated companies. Sometimes you can get free or discounted memberships with associations and clubs.

Others will offer you straight up cash back in your pocket every time you spend money in certain shops.

Therefore, if you often spend money with certain companies or buy certain products you can cash in by switching your method of payment from cash or debit card to the reward credit card.

Make sure the rewards on offer aren't the only thing you consider when choosing a credit card though. You could face a higher interest charge or a service fee which outweighs the benefits.

It's also important to look into whether the maximum rewards you receive are capped at a certain level or whether the period that you receive the reward for runs out a few months into the account.

However, if you choose cannily, spend wisely and pay off your balance every month, there's every chance a reward credit card could work out to be a tidy little earner.
