Apacs suggests that debit cards come out on top in a credit card comparison.
The UK payments association claims that debit cards are now among the most frequently used methods for purchasing goods.
And spokesperson Simon Bennett predicts wider acceptance of cards by small businesses as they seek to compete with convenience stores which belong to larger companies such as Tesco.
"If they offer the option of using a debit or credit card there, then the customer may choose to spend money in that store," he explains.
"Cash remains quite dominant, but more and more people are choosing to use their debit card," Mr Bennett adds.
A recent credit card comparison conducted by Apacs to celebrate the 20th anniversary of debit cards suggested that spending on the cards will overtake cash by 2011.
