Holidaymakers should compare credit cards to ensure they are not wasting money on hidden charges, it has been claimed.

Nationwide advises Britons heading abroad over the summer months that paying by credit card could incur roaming charges.

Research conducted by the financial services provider reveals such fees cost UK credit card holders £326 million over the course of 2006.

But the firm states that tourists who compare credit cards could find the penalties may be avoided.

"People who are planning to go abroad over the next few months should be aware of the hidden charges that most card providers impose which are both costly and unnecessary," warns divisional director Jeremy Wood.

Nationwides Consumer Confidence index for June 2007 found decreasing certainty among Britons about the amount of money they are willing to spend in the coming months.
