Following claims that London is the UKs biggest "fraud hotspot", it has been suggested that such an assertion will always remain the case.
Mark Bowerman, spokesperson for UK payments association Apacs, explains that the city has a great number of cards in circulation and a relatively high population.
These combine to create a high level of credit card fraud, he notes, making London rank highly in research reports.
"We would agree that London is the fraud hotspot in the UK ... It always has been and probably always will be," he says.
But whether in the capital or in Yorkshire, Mr Bowerman claims there are steps consumers can take to lower their risk of fraud.
"As long as you are a cardholder whos following common sense precautions you can minimise the chances of yourself becoming a victim," he states.
Mr Bowerman points out that, although cash machine fraud first occurred in London, it has since spread throughout the UK.
