The UK payments association has suggested that emerging technologies could be the start of a revolution in the way we purchase things.
Apacs claims that the use of electronic cards is on the increase, with plastic used "more and more".
Spokesperson Jemma Smith says: "Chip and pin has meant many more places are offering cards.
"Many people are using cards for low-value transactions because its faster - and in a way they may not have ten years ago."
She adds that Britons are typically carrying less cash and fewer chequebooks on their person.
Ms Smith contends that the coming generation is happy to rely on plastic cards more regularly.
However, further innovations could see electronic payment take on new forms in the future as public interest progresses to a sufficient level of support, she adds.
Techniques such as text messaging and mobile phone banking could become de rigueur, the spokesperson concludes.
