Britons are emptying their savings accounts in the pursuit of lavishly furnished nurseries, it has been revealed.
Some £1.8 billion is spent annually on fixtures and fittings for home nurseries, according to Halifax figures.
And the financial services provider warns that many parents go over the original budget set for themselves.
Some ten per cent of survey respondents claimed to have gone more than £1,000 over budget, while 68 per cent had no budget whatsoever.
"Expectant parents bringing thousands of pounds of new items into the home should check their home insurance policy to ensure they have adequate cover.
"Policies that offer unlimited contents cover can protect parents bringing expensive gifts and baby monitoring equipment into the home," advises senior manager of underwriting Vicky Emmott.
Meanwhile, Halifax recently joined the Unclaimed Assets Register in an attempt to reunite Britons with funds left in dormant savings accounts.
