New students heading away to university this September could be looking to find the best bank account to suit their needs before the start of term.

Among the latest to be launched is NatWests student package, which comes with an interest-free overdraft of £1,250, rising to £2,000 by the fifth year of study.

Those who open one of the accounts before the end of October are promised a Microsoft Lifecam as a free gift, enabling them to keep in touch by online video with friends and family.

Mark Worthington, head of NatWest student and graduate banking, says: "When choosing a student account, you should look for a bank that really understands the situation students are in."

"The NatWest 2008 student package has evolved in response to what students have told us really matters to them," he adds.

Also provided when a new account is opened is a five-year young persons railcard, helping to cut the costs of those weekend visits back home.

Despite the traditional north-south spending divide, students in the capital might not be facing the greatest affordability issues while at university.

NatWest recently revealed research which found that the average Manchester household spends nearly £2,000 more each year than its London equivalent.ADNFCR-8000200-ID-18646581-ADNFCR©
