How to Switch

Switching should be easy, due to the protections afforded by the Banking Code - although it is worth checking that a financial services provider is part of the scheme before opening an account with them.

It is probably best to ask for assistance from the bank where you wish to open the new account - they should be able to tell you the main steps you need to take, including how to close your old account.

If your previous service provider is a member of the Banking Code scheme, they will then inform your new bank of any regular payments attached to your account - such as standing orders and direct debits.

A list of the features associated with your new account should also be provided on request - meaning you can compare with what you had previously to ensure the move is to be beneficial.

Plus, if you go through the entire process and still find you are not happy, there is a 14-day cooling off period from when you enter into the contract, during which time you can cancel and move to a different account with the same institution, or receive all of your money back with appropriate interest on top.
