Vets question cheap pet insurance

A survey of vets has shown that 90 per cent are concerned by budget pet insurance policies.

The More Than research showed fears that there are time limits for treatment.

Furthermore, despite the fact that 81 per cent of vets surveyed estimated the life expectancy of a medium-sized dog to be 13 to 15 years, many insurers do not cover dogs over eight-years-old.

People are advised to make sure that their policies will continue to cover their dogs treatment costs for longer than just 12 months.

Graham Hollebon, head of product for More Than, said: "With dogs living increasingly longer its unacceptable for insurers only to cover young dogs.

"Veterinary care has developed significantly over the last decade but as dogs get older they are more likely to suffer illnesses which can often be lengthy and expensive to treat."

"Its crucial for owners to choose a policy that doesnt limit treatment to just the first twelve months before the pet needs any long-term care."

He added: "Our research shows that 95 per cent of vets surveyed believe pet insurance is a responsible thing for pet owners to have so that they are not faced with huge bills should their beloved pet fall ill or need ongoing treatment."
