More Th>n has revealed the cost of office gossip in a study conducted by its business insurance subsidiary.
However, it claimed that £43 billion is a small price to pay in exchange for having a "buzz" around the office.
Mike Bowman, head of More Th>n Business, said: "A bit of office banter is hugely important for business. Not only is it essential for staff morale and keeping informed on social affairs, but it also helps office workers solve any problems."
The report found that 59 per cent of workers appreciate information gleaned from colleagues more than that learned on training courses.
Some 18 per cent said their workmates had helped them through a life crisis such as divorce or bereavement.
"Whilst excessive chit-chat is certainly not encouraged, it is clear that a happy office is a productive one," Mr Bowman added.
The figure equates to about 18 million working hours lost every day, according to More Th>n.
More Th>n Business provides a range of insurance policies to companies and says it offers a speedy service with a 24-hour helpline.
