The Knowledge on Gadget Insurance

We all like to keep up with the latest technology. Some of us can't live without a pocket full of it in this day and age.

The problem is, our gadgets can often represent heartache and a financial disaster waiting to happen. All too often the fate of our smartphones, tablets, laptops, portable music players and games consoles is an inopportune meeting with the pavement, the toilet or a thief. And when any of those occurs, you're left either a gadget or a hefty wad of money light.

But not if you take out gadget insurance. For as little as a few pounds per month, you can get covered for when the worst happens. And let's face it, however careful we are, we're all on a timeline until it does.

The gadget insurance market is generally pretty simple. You pay weekly, monthly or annually and you get what you pay for. Policies will generally cover one or more out of theft, loss, breakdown and accidental damage. But you don't always have to insure each gadget individually; some policies will allow you to cover up to five together, with a set maximum claim figure. Make sure this top end figure would cover all of your valuables if a real unthinkable catastrophe were to occur and you lost your entire tech set.

A few things to watch out for in the world of gadget insurance:

• Check out how much the excess would be if you need to make a claim - with the top end smartphones this could be three figures, but if you pay a bit more on your initial policy you'll bring the excess cost down.

• Look to see if there's anything in the small print that would stop you making a claim - some insurers will specify that you need to act within a certain amount of time of damage or loss; others will look to weasel out of paying if you were deemed not to have taken necessary precautions.

• Check to see whether water damage is covered within the realms of accident or breakdown. Most policies worth their salt will cover it; that's by no means all.

• Make sure you know when your cover starts and ends. There's often an initial period before the policies is valid in order to guard against fraud and retrospective claims.

• If you're looking at getting a smartphone on a contract, try to get the network carrier to throw you in insurance as a deal sweetener. Remember to compare all of the other details of the policy with what's available through the gizmo providers - one thing to look out for especially is any limitations on the number of claims you can make in a year.

Gadget insurance might seem like a chore - especially when you've had to shell out a small fortune to kit yourself out with the latest gizmos in the first place. But if there's one thing worse than buying them once, it's buying them twice.
