Speeding fines increasing vehicle insurance costs

Drivers have been advised that speeding on the roads can not only put points on their licence, but it can also increase the cost of vehicle insurance.

As well as a £60 fine, a typical SP30 speeding offence can increase insurance costs for the next three years.

With a first offence remaining on file for five years, subsequent offences could invariably result in more costly premiums.

"There is a direct relationship between speed and insurance claims so insurers take speeding offences seriously," explained Janet Pell, motor insurance manager of AA Insurance.

"You would pay even more if you transgress twice in the same year. And add a CD10 conviction for driving without due care and attention (for example crossing a red traffic light) and your insurance bill could almost double - or you may find it difficult to obtain cover at all."

However the AA added that drivers with points on their licences should shop around to find the best online prices for vehicle insurance, as not all insurers will pay the same amount of attention to speeding fines; some may increase premiums by as little as ten per cent for a CD10 while others double them.
