With tens of thousands of football fans heading to Germany in the next few weeks for the world cup, those travelling there by road have been advised to ensure their vehicle insurance is up to date.

Despite the fact that the number of road accidents has declined in the past few years, the Co-Operative Bank has warned that there is a greater risk of being involved in an accident on roads which are unfamiliar.

Even if people are not involved in accidents, the cost of bringing a broken down car back to the UK far outweighs a car insurance policy, with some recoveries costing as much as £1,200.

Car owners should also check with their insurer as to whether or not they need a Green Card to ensure that cover is extended to countries on the continent.

The insurer added that travel insurance should also be taken into consideration as very often medical treatment which would come for free in the UK could prove far more costly for those on the continent.
