A leading insurer is highlighting the benefits of car sharing, and advising drivers to travel to work with friends, neighbours and colleagues.
According to Halifax Car Insurance, drivers who travel to work alone everyday pay an average of £1,017 a year on petrol and other expenses.
But by setting up a car pool with colleagues and using their vehicle on alternate days, or a few times a week, they could cut their costs in half, Halifax says.
The research reveals that during rush hour there are over ten million cars travelling with no passengers, leaving 38 million unoccupied seats.
And despite the fact that more than two thirds of UK drivers think that car sharing is a good idea, just one in five regularly offers lifts.
Mike Pickard, head of underwriting at Halifax Car Insurance, said: "Passengers in the car not only improve your environmental credentials, they can also act as an extra pair of eyes for you, especially in the morning rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest."
Halifaxs findings coincide with National Lift Share Day on Wednesday June 14th.
