Poor home security is leading to owners losing their car, as famous names such as David Davies and Frank Lampard will testify.
Their loss of vehicle and possessions will form part of the £750 million motorists are expected to lose this summer through poor home security, according to Norwich Union Insurance.
"The most obvious places to keep keys are the worst places, yet Brits continue to use them without much consideration for how easy they are making it for burglars," warned ex-burglar Bob Turney.
Although the government and police have campaigned to raise awareness amongst householders about opportunistic theft, many still leave keys in sight and in bunches.
People leave windows open, give keys out to workers without having them returned, or leave them in the open for burglars to "fish" for them through letterboxes and cat-flaps.
Mr Turney advised motorists to keep valuables and keys out of sight, keep toolsheds locked and to not label key use, particularly with a home address.
"We would urge people to review their home insurance policies to ensure they have sufficient cover in the event of a burglary, but if they take the advice of ex-burglar Bob Turney, they could prevent it happening in the first place," added Paul Redington, claims manager at Norwich Union.
