Norwich Union has welcomed a new initiative by the Metropolitan Police to crack down on dangerous driving.
Police from the Commercial Vehicle Education Unit (CVEU) will pay a visit to the companies of drivers caught using a mobile or speeding to enquire about what measures the firm will take to address the issue.
Its intention is to encourage businesses to confront their health and safety responsibilities, under which companies could be prosecuted for persistent offending, and so to reduce the number of offences perpetrated in commercial vehicles.
"Failing to monitor staff behaviour with regard to using mobile phones while driving is a serious breach of a companys duty of care, especially with the activity being illegal," warned Bill Pownall, motor risk manager for the car insurance provider Norwich Union.
"And in light of the impending corporate manslaughter legislation, companies need to be thinking about how their drivers behaviour could land senior managers in court," he added.
The Freight Operators Recognition Scheme is currently being tested in London.
