Drivers could save thousands of pounds in car insurance payments over a lifetime by maintaining a clean licence, according to new research.

A study by Privilege Insurance has found that having a four-year no claims discount can save a driver up to £203 a year, working out at over £10,000 during a lifetime.

The findings indicate that even if you do suffer a small prang, it may be more worthwhile to pay for repairs yourself than lose the no claims discount.

"The research shows that safe drivers are saving thousands of pounds by staying accident free, as well as making the roads a safer place for us all," commented Ian Parker, the firms managing director.

"The lifetime saving that safe drivers can make is further incentive for all drivers to take care when behind the wheel."

Keeping your car in a secured parking area will also help keep premiums down, as will a Thatcham approved immobiliser.

In addition, making modifications to a vehicle, such as adding a rear spoiler or tinted windows, can push annual rates up higher.
