New research from Lloyds TSB Insurance has demonstrated how much Britons hold affection for their cars.
The company carried out a poll to find the UKs best-loved fictional car, only to find a vehicle which hit our screens 20 years ago was still the nations favourite.
The winning vehicle was the KITT car, which was the star of the show in the television series that made David Hasselhoff a household name, Knight Rider.
Phil Loney, managing director, of Lloyds TSB Insurance, suggests that the enduring success of KITT, the talking Pontiac Trans-Am, has something to do with the nostalgia Britons hold for their vehicles. It may no longer look like a futuristic, cutting-edge car, but KITT was not the only old timer to make it into the top ten.
In second place was the Mini used by Michael Caine in the Italian Job, while Dick van Dykes Chitty Chitty Bang Bang came in fourth behind Herbie.
However, it seems that the unique security features of Knight Riders KITT – which included flamethrowers and smoke bombs – helped the car to come in at number one, as Mr Loney explains: "Two decades on and the cars of 2006 still dont have personalities or protect their owners from all forms of danger, so its easy to understand why KITT had such an effect on the nation."
Security features are increasingly important to keep the cost of insurance down, although the scrapes that KITTs driver would normally get into would have surely pushed up any insurance premium!
