The online insurer Swiftcover.com has become the first UK firm to provide car insurance quotes via text message.
Swift Text offers motorists the opportunity to receive a quote direct to their mobile phone in less than five minutes, meaning an end to lengthy and expensive telephone calls.
The system uses a four-step procedure that includes entering a considerable number of relevant details.
Postcode, age, and number of years of no claims are the first facts to be entered, followed by car registration number, name and occupation.
The customer then receives a quote and a quote ID number and is directed to the companys website, where the user can put in their personalised number and buy the policy shortly afterwards.
The scheme is expected to prove popular with busy motorists although they are also advised to head on to the internet and compare the possibilities offered by other firms, as quotes can differ wildly between companies.
