Financial services advisor Defaqto has encouraged motorists to compare car insurance policies from a range of providers to see if they could make savings.

The calls come after research by the company found two thirds of insurers offer discounts to customers buying online and many offer cashback deals for switching policies.

And Defaqto predicts that the expected rise in premiums will only occur if companies such as Churchill raise their prices first.

Brian Brown, head of general insurance research at Defaqto and author of the report, said: "The intense amount of competition in the market at present is keeping comprehensive premiums from rising."

"With the internet it is now so easy for customers to shop around and so many insurers are still giving introductory discounts," he added.

The suggestion to compare car insurance premiums comes as there is "little need" for customers to stick with their current provider, according to Defaqto.

Defaqtos parent company, the Independent Research Group, was recently acquired by Find Portal, which says it specialises in brand development for the financial services sector.
