Sainsburys Bank has warned its car insurance customers to drive safely in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Its forecasts for the coming months followed the publication of results which showed four per cent or some 1.14 million drivers have had an accident in the past six months.

Richard Clark, manager of car insurance at Sainsburys Bank, said: "Christmas brings with it the threats of drink and fatigue and in the run up to the festive season we urge people to take extra care."

"If youre running late, dont be tempted to speed," he added, reflecting research which showed up to 26 per cent will speed over the season and 38 per cent will drive while feeling tired.

The under-24s are especially at risk, according to Sainsburys Bank, with 12 per cent of those surveyed reporting an accident between April and September of this year.

Sainsburys Bank says it will provide online quotes for car insurance to customers with more than one years no-claims bonus and offers up to a 70 per cent discount for those whose no-claims bonus is up to five years.
