More Than has announced it is to compare car insurance costs for its environmentally-conscious drivers in order to reduce premiums for green motorists.
The move represents an expansion of existing cover offered by the insurer for hybrid vehicles with low harmful emissions.
And More Than claimed that it has become the UKs first carbon-neutral insurer, funding projects for the installation of renewable energy resources which cancel its own usage of non-renewable varieties.
Bridget McIntyre, chief executive officer of parent company Royal & Sun Alliance, said: "Research tells us that consumers think insurers should take climate change into account in terms of their operations."
"We will continue to research products and services, like our hybrid car discount, that reward customers," she added.
Research carried out by More Than found that nearly 60 per cent of consumers take environmental policies into account when deciding which insurance company to take their policy with.
More Than launched its discounts for hybrid vehicles in response to a study which showed 22 million UK drivers would consider switching to such a car in order to reduce motoring costs.
