RAC Car Insurance is advising drivers to ensure they have adequate visibility when driving in the run-up to Christmas.

Research from RAC showed that many of the techniques used to clear ice and frost from windscreens may crack the glass, resulting in cars being driven illegally and voiding car insurance.

Some 29 per cent of drivers surveyed claimed to have used hot water to melt ice from windscreens, at the risk of breaking the glass in cold conditions.

John Tutt, operations director for RAC, said: "Many motorists are taking inadequate and potentially dangerous measures to defrost their windscreens during the winter months."

"Its important that drivers take the extra time to prepare their cars for winter conditions safely," he stressed.

With 54 per cent of motorists saying they had left their car running to allow it to warm up, the risk of theft was also highlighted.

Policies taken from RAC Car Insurance do not cover theft when the keys are in the ignition, according to the terms and conditions.
