Insurer Norwich Union states there are 50 per cent more accidents in frosty weather if you compare car insurance claims with those which occur in the warmer seasons.

Now advisers from Norwich Union are warning motorists to drive more carefully in frost, which they say is more dangerous than snow.

Eric Nelson, spokesperson for Norwich Union, said: "On days with snow, as opposed to wet days, we only see ten per cent more accidents."

"The invisible factor that people just dont realise [is] the roads are going to be slicker in hard frost," he added.

Meanwhile, Sainsburys Bank has noted an increase in thefts as a result of the colder weather.

According to Sainsburys Bank, icy conditions cause an increase in frosting, where cars which are left with their engines running to melt ice are stolen while unattended.

Some simple measures which may prevent this include the use of deicer and antifreeze, as well as ensuring wiper blades are not split or cracked, Sainsburys Bank advised.
