Insurer More Than has revealed that van insurance claims are frequently due to malicious damage or theft.

Up to ten per cent of claims in Scotland and up to five per cent in areas such as the West Midlands were found to be for malicious crimes.

More Than cited statistics which showed the average cost incurred to be some £2,000, while firms may have lost time with tools stolen or vehicles off the road.

The firm is now offering a £50 fuel voucher to all new van insurance customers in order to encourage them to protect their vehicles.

Mark Christer, director of More Than Business, said: "Not only is this type of crime an added stress, but often theft of a business vehicle means that owners of small businesses have to invest in new tools."

"The average cost of a tool box is around £4,000," he added.

More Than suggests that van insurance customers could save up to 60 per cent with five years no-claim bonus, or 17 per cent by restricting policies to four named drivers.
