Motorists should be cautious of using mobile phones while driving, Sainsburys Bank has warned.

The financial services provider issued the advice as penalties for being caught using a phone while at the wheel are made tougher from February 27th 2007.

Drivers found guilty of the offence may now receive a fine of £60, twice the previous amount, as well as three points on their licence.

Steve Johnson, head of car insurance at Sainsburys Bank, said: "Of course its tempting to answer the phone but using one without a hands free kit whilst driving is not only illegal, its also extremely dangerous.

"Hopefully, the tougher penalties will deter more people from doing this."

Research conducted by the bank found that 29 per cent of under-24s admitted to using a mobile phone while driving during a typical month.

Fellow insurer the AA previously advised that car insurance premiums could rise for a period of up to five years following the endorsement of a drivers licence for the offence.
