Learner drivers who give up before passing their test are wasting an estimated £3.2 billion on lessons, according to Churchill Car Insurance.
The company conducted research which found that one in ten Britons have quit their driving lessons without passing their test.
While the number who pass their test in less than a year was seen to be more than 60 per cent, four per cent had been learning for between five and ten years before passing.
This compares with the two per cent of non-drivers who had quit their lessons after failing their test on ten separate occasions.
Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance, said: "Our research clearly shows the steep cost of learning to drive.
"Learner drivers face financial pressure to pass their test first time with as few lessons as possible."
The firm advises young drivers who have recently passed their test to choose a car with a relatively small engine and shop around to reduce their car insurance premiums.
