Insurance provider Direct Line has published figures which compare car insurance policyholders obligations with their actions.
The insurer found that many drivers leave essential maintenance tasks until their cars annual service, potentially rendering the vehicle unroadworthy for up to a year.
Any claims made against the policy could be made invalid by such actions, as roadworthiness is a required condition in order for the insurance to apply.
Emma Holyer, motor spokesperson for Direct Line, said: "It is important for drivers to be able to make basic safety checks on their vehicle, such as checking tyre pressure and oil level."
"These checks are essential before embarking on a long journey," she added.
According to the insurer, motorists could save up to £140 million each year in mechanics fees by carrying out simple repairs and maintenance tasks at home.
Direct Line previously encouraged households with more than one vehicle to compare car insurance costs for separate policies with its multi-vehicle package.
