Environmentally friendly drivers could save money while helping the global climate, according to figures which compare car insurance costs with a new policy from ibuyeco.
The new package includes a commitment to carbon offsetting, which combats global warming by contributing to environmental projects aimed at eliminating the harmful effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
And despite the additional charge incorporated into premiums to pay for the service, ibuyeco suggests that those who compare car insurance costs with their current cover could see a potential saving to be made.
"Despite the addition, ibueyco compares well against other insurance products on the market," the insurer states.
"Research has shown that consumers can actually save money with the scheme, compared to other brands - up to £175.88."
The company cites research which found that the average CO2 emissions produced by the UK school run each year total some two million tonnes - more than that of the Bahamas.
But with the new car insurance product launched this week by the firm, motorists may fully offset their carbon emissions.
Managing director Matthew Gledhill reasons that "people recognise that sometimes creating a carbon impact is unavoidable, but they still want to do something about it".
Extra charges added to pay for the service are based on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle and estimated mileages provided by customers, ibuyeco advises.
The firm adds that carbon offsetting is achieved through a partnership with the CarbonNeutral Company, which operates a number of projects worldwide.
In the UK the companys CO2 offsetting is achieved via forestry, while other projects include solar power installations in Sri Lanka and hydropower facilities in Bulgaria.
