Women are forgetting to carry out basic vehicle maintenance checks and may be risking their female car insurance.

According to research from LV=, women are worse at ensuring they have enough windscreen washer fluid and checking their windscreen is clean before setting off.

Where as 11 per cent of men neglect these checks and others, such as forgetting to clean wing mirrors and headlights, 14 per cent of women are putting their safety at risk by not carrying these out.

According to Emma Holyer, motor spokesperson for LV=, this type of vehicle maintenance "should be second nature".

"Our research shows that this doesnt appear to be the case despite it being a legal requirement," she added.

It was also found that women leave more items and clutter in their cars than men - another factor which might risk their female car insurance as thieves may be more attracted to a car full of gadgets and valuables.

"Cleaning out your car frequently is not only easier on the eye, but safer and easier on the pocket too," Ms Holyer concluded.

Other factors that may cause car insurance premiums to rise include the make and model of the vehicle and the drivers experience.
