Whatever policy you opt for, there are some general rules you can follow to help keep the cost down:

- Live healthily: In the majority of cases your health insurance premium will be more expensive if you have an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly if you smoke or are overweight. So, keeping to a healthy diet and lifestyle and generally looking after yourself and your family is an essential and fundamental way to save money.

- Look after your teeth and gums: Likewise, a decent oral hygiene routine for you and your family will go a long way to cutting out dental costs.

- Check your employee benefits: As a part of employment privileges, many employers provide some form of health cover or discounted cover for their workers (and sometimes their workers’ partners/families too). This is most common in government organisations and large companies who use their bulk buying power to acquire cheap policies. So before you buy your own policy, check to see whether you are already covered by your (or your spouse’s) employer.

- Get a joint, family or group policy: In most cases this will work out cheaper. And remember, many policies will cover your children at no extra cost.

- Shop around and check the small print: Always compare policies by their cover features and privileges as well as their price. Consider whether you require all features offered by a policy, or whether a cheaper, less comprehensive policy would be adequate for your needs.
