Protect your home from burglars

Last year in the UK there were 750,000 burglaries and young people and those with insufficient security are most at risk, according a new study.

Figures from Lloyds TSB Insurance show that to reduce the risk of burglary there are a few simple steps to take, especially when you first move into a house.

The first thing you should do is try to think like a burglar.

You should ask yourself whether there are any high wall of shrubs obscuring the front of the house, if there is a burglar alarm or security lighting and whether are any secluded alleys at the end of the garden to hide in and make a quick getaway.

In the garden homeowners should plant thorny bushes by the boundaries of the property, as they are a great deterrent, and make sure there are no ladders that can be used or equipment like bikes or lawnmowers that can be swiped.

Burglars often use backdoors, as people often forget to lock them or they are not strong enough. Make sure your backdoor has windows made of toughened glass and has bolts at the top and bottom.

After moving try not to advertise the fact that someone new, possibly with brand new products, is now living there. Do not throw out old boxes you used in the move as these are a right giveaway.

Protecting your home with good home insurance is also important just in case the worst does happen.
