Cyclists are being warned to check if their home insurance policies cover bike thefts.
New figures released by the Halifax indicate that over half of bike thefts occur outside of the home, meaning that it is imperative to check if bikes are covered when on the go.
The majority of home insurance firms include the theft of bikes if personal possessions are part of the policy although there are some notable exceptions, including Tesco Personal Finances cover, which requires that an extra policy is taken out for bicycles.
Lucy Cooke from Halifax General Insurance told This is Money: "It is important to check whether you are covered when out and about because you could end up catching the bus if your bike is stolen."
The company said that the badlands of Kingston upon Thames were the most likely place to have your bike stolen, with the cycling students of Oxford and Cambridge also often returning to a single bicycle wheel.
