DIY fans are being advised to make sure they take out adequate insurance to cover possible calamities, reports the Mail on Sunday.

Many home improvers have been shocked to discover that paint spillages, foots through attic ceilings and holes drilled in pipes are not covered by an average home insurance policy.

Lucy Cooke of Halifax told the newspaper: "Accidental breakage to things like baths and sinks is included in most insurance, but people doing DIY may need extra cover to protect them if they cause damage."

Most insurers offer add-on accidental damage packages that give DIY experts and their families peace of mind for between £20 and £60.

Even then, however, it is best to check before beginning work, as Norwich Union spokesman David Ross explains.

"If you have full accidental damage insurance, most common DIY disasters will be covered. But if you are doing a big job such as putting on a new roof or an extension, speak to your insurer to make sure you are covered."

Paint spillages are the most common DIY mishap, according to insurer More Than, with replacement carpets costing an average £1,250.
