Homeowners are being advised to check that their home insurance policies cover garden items.
A study by Churchill Home Insurance claims that thieves have taken £295 million in garden equipment and ornaments over the years.
The research also highlights the worrying fact that 23 per cent of households have had garden and garden shed contents removed, including tools, bikes and even clothes from the washing line.
With 38 per cent of those asked stating they felt their gardens were not sufficiently secure and with an average of £738 worth of items located in them, it is little wonder that thieves are targeting gardens.
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, commented: "It is clear that garden security is not always at the forefront of many householders minds. It is in householders interests to take reasonable precautions such as fitting locks to gates, sheds and outbuildings and not leaving possessions in the garden after use."
So, before you decide to leave your new barbeque out overnight, check to see if items left in your garden are covered under your insurance policy.
