Before taking out home insurance it is vital that people analyse the providers policy on making a claim, according to independent researchers Defaqto.
Some insurers have stringent rules on how and when claims can be made following an accident or theft, making a seemingly attractive policy less so.
Brian Brown, associate director of Defaqto, advised that claims management should be a vital consideration in deciding which home insurance policy to take out.
"With some you have to report all claims within 24 hours and some companies stick to this to the second," he said.
"Others may ask for a copy of the exact receipt - try producing that with your wedding ring."
Recent research from Halifax Home Insurance revealed that Britain is facing a growing problem with mobile phone theft, adding to the need for people to find out whether their phones are covered by their home insurance and how quickly they will need to make a claim.
