Every household in the UK should expect to suffer six disasters or accidents in the home during the course of a lifetime, according to new research.

The study by home insurance firm Churchill indicates that 3.2 million homes in the UK are struck by calamities such as fire, flood, accidental damage or burglary each year.

A worrying half of us will have our homes broken into during our lifetimes, the report indicates, with a similar likelihood of storm damage affecting our properties.

The findings highlight the importance of taking out adequate home insurance in case the worst happens.

Martin Scott, head of home insurance at Churchill, commented: "Whilst the smaller household accidents are inconveniences which affect us all, a number of householders will suffer a major disaster and the effects could be devastating.

"Householders without the reassurance of home insurance can spend years rebuilding their lives should such disasters occur."

One in ten homes is likely to suffer fire damage, according to the report, with subsidence (six per cent) and flood (three per cent), also worryingly common occurrences.
