Brits are being advised to check whether their home insurance policy covers street theft.

According to the survey by Zurich Insurance, the average person in the UK is believed to carry around £851 in clothes, jewellery, gadgets and other items when out and about.

The figures highlight the attraction of street robbery for nefarious types, showing women and professionals over the age of 35 to be the most rewarding targets, carrying price tags of £904 and £991 respectively.

Many home insurance policies do not cover theft or losses that occur outside the home, so it is important to check whether or not you are covered.

"Everyday we are walking around wearing or carrying things that that are worth a surprising amount - and many people arent aware of the total value of all of their gadgets and gizmos," said Martin Hall, head of home underwriting at the firm.

Some 27 per cent of Britons have been the victims of a street robbery, Zurich claims.
