Many Britons are not considering the value of the property in their gardens, according to a report from Co-operative Insurance.
A number of home insurance policies do not include garden contents as standard, so it is imperative that you check that you are covered, as instances of garden theft are thought to be growing.
The study claims that many home owners are leaving items such as rotovators and lawnmowers unattended during both the day and at night, meaning thieves unable to gain access to the house are still getting away with expensive items.
In addition, many ornamental objects, such as statues and pots, are proving attractive to criminals and can cost a large amount of money to replace.
David Newman, director of marketing at Co-operative Insurance, commented: "Nowadays people are spending increasing sums of money on their gardens, in particular when the sun is shining."
"However, many people fail to appreciate the total value of their garden items and, more importantly, how to safeguard them," he added.
Many insurance firms place a low limit on the amount that can be claimed in lost garden furniture and equipment, so it is important to keep as many items locked away as possible.
