A home insurer has warned that students can be any easy target for burglars, with an average of £4,000 worth of possessions.

Specialist student policies can be pricey, says More Than, but some providers will cover the young adults possessions with their parents own policy.

The deal being offered by More Than makes up to 15 per cent of house cover available for a student going to university for no extra cost.

"Parents can have a lot to think about when their children go away to university, to ensure they are financially secure and protected against any eventuality," said Craig Allen, head of home insurance at More Than.

The Association of Independent Trust Companies found recently that many students and their parents still underestimate the cost of going to university.

Parents apparently expect their children to graduate with an average debt of £7,080, which is close to only half the actual national average graduation debt of £13,500.
