As thousands of students say goodbye to tearful parents over the coming days and return to university, experts are reminding them of the importance of having adequate contents insurance.

According to official statistics, 16 to 24-year-olds are three times more likely to be burgled than any other age group, meaning the value of taking out adequate insurance cannot be overemphasised.

Barclays is one firm that offers a tailored student possessions policy.

It has a 24-hour helpline, a monthly payment option with no extra cost and claims are settled on a new for old basis, except for linen and clothing.

Mark Till, marketing director at Barclays Insurance, said: "Insurance is one of the absolute essentials for all students yet so many neglect to take it out.

"We all know that there are so many other things that will be keeping students busy in their first days at university; inductions, lectures, seminars and not forgetting freshers’ week! As a result many simply do not even think about contents insurance."

Insurance premiums start from £2 per month.
